How to Personalize Your Home Decor

There are so many great things you can easily do to your new or existing home to make it unique to you. As an Interior Stylist, I am a firm believer that a home should be a beautiful reflection of those living in it. When someone walks into your home they should be able to learn more about you, your personality, and what is important to you. There are a few steps I would start with in creating a home that is personalized to you.

1. Paint and Color Scheme

Picking out a color scheme is ONE of the first steps I would start with. Think about your favorite colors, choose multiple tones within those colors and bring samples home. Lighting is different in every space so it is extremely important to see how the lighting in your home will affect your paint and color choices. Each room should have it’s own personality so don’t be afraid to mix up colors in each room.

2. Update Your Window Treatments and Lighting

Window treatments and lighting are such a simple way to update your space and make a significant impact. Choose window treatments that properly scale your windows. Hang drapes outside the windows and above to create a more dramatic space. Lighting is such an important piece to creating a mood in each room. Dimmers are a cost effective nice touch to allow you to set the mood depending on the time of day. Lighting doesn’t have to be the same in different rooms so it allows you to make each space unique.

3. Designate Your Focal Point In Each Room

Every room should have a focal point, something that draws your attention. It could be a family heirloom, collectible you picked up traveling, or something you can display that incorporates your personality into your home. Utilize an item that creates a story and that means something to you. For example, it could be a family clock, or an art piece, utilize items that speak to you.

4. Make Your Home Functional For Your Hobbies

Create a space in your home that allows you to enjoy your favorite hobbies. It could be a cozy reading corner, a sewing room, a man cave with a pool table, or an outdoor space for entertaining. Designate an area in your home that reflects your interests and allows you to incorporate your hobbies and things that you enjoy. Homes are meant to be enjoyed and to make memories in.

5. Photos and Artwork

A great way to add personality and life to your home is through photos of things, places you have travelled, or people you have created memories with. A gallery wall is an easy way to display a selection of photos in your home. An easy start to a gallery wall is picking out similar frames or mixing colors up with frames. You can also choose all black and white photos if you like a more uniform look. Artwork is also a way to display your personality and interests. Purchase art that means something to you, it could be a quote or phrase, or a painting of a place that has meaning to you. Have your artwork and photos tell a story.

6. Get Creative With Wall Décor

Photos and artwork are great as wall décor. If you have a hobby that you really enjoy don’t be afraid to put it to use as wall décor. It could be books put on the wall, collectible plates, an antique bike, the more creative the more unique and personalized your space will become.

I hope you enjoy creating your new or existing home into a unique space that speaks to you!
